We switch to years later, following security guard David Dunn (Bruce Willis). His life is falling apart, and he's searching for some meaning as his marriage hits the skids. Then, on a return trip from New York, he survives a horrible train wreck without a single injury as the sole survivor.
David is contacted by Elijah, who runs an art gallery, and though he ignores the ridiculous claims Elijah makes at first, the proposal that David might be the sort of man that comic book superheroes are based off of eventually makes him curious enough to start testing his own limits. David discovers he's stronger than he ever thought he was, and he begins to have impressions from people he brushes past about the acts they're committing. David saves a family that's being held captive and tortured because of these impressions, becoming a true to life hero.
The film ends with David attending an exhibition at Elijah's art gallery. He meets Elijah's mother, and then has a long conversation with the gallery owner in the back room. When he shakes Elijah's hand though, David discovers that he was the malignant force behind dozens of horrible accidents, all perpetrated to try and find the one man that was unbreakable. Elijah, called Mr. Glass as a child, believes he's the archnemesis to David's superhero.
